Adam Hudson Lecture
For our April meeting we were delighted to welcome Adam Hudson from the North Western Society of Magicians, based in Barrow-in-Furness, with his eponymously titled lecture ‘The Mind of Adam Hudson’. Adam’s work has been described as ‘inspirational’ by the likes of Derren Brown and Marc Oberon.
Adam began by explaining his background and why he creates effects which require little manual dexterity.
He began by setting the scene with a ‘Mathematical Oddities’ routine, resulting in multiple revelations of increasingly high figures arrived at by calculator. Then came Adam’s take on the ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’ game, ingeniously employing magnetic shapes and letters.
‘Stop, Lock and Listen’ was based on the premise of a locked revelation which could only be released by the number combination which was to be revealed inside! This was a fiendishly clean force, apparently carried out by the audience volunteer.
A birth date was predicted in ’The Prime of Life’, while use was made of the fact that numbers can be read as names when inverted on a calculator. Again, this was a very clever principle unique to Adam.
In ‘Cubic’, dealt cards were used to solve a Rubik’s Cube (somebody alluded to Paul Curry’s Swindle Switch) while two tossed dice led to the prediction of cards, either as a hands-off Brainwave or Ambitious Card. ‘My Thoughts Exactly’ was the catchy title.
By the end of the afternoon, Adam had covered all levels of ability from ‘self-workers’ to the more mathematically ambitious. As President Donald remarked in his closing vote of thanks, wouldn’t things have been different if he had had Adam as his maths teacher! So said many of us.
Adam had some routines available for purchase, along with his two attractively produced and clearly written books, ‘Out of My Mind’ and ‘With You in Mind’. It was a most informative session, yielding something for everyone.
